The Primary Care Provider position is responsible for managing acute and chronic medical conditions, both physical and mental, in conjunction with the Psychiatric Advanced Nurse Practitioner and the Integrated Treatment Team. Performs history and physical exams, orders diagnostic tests and preforms medical treatments. Diagnoses medical problems, orders or preforms treatments, performs advanced procedures, prescribes medications, makes referrals to specialty care for a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions within their scope of practice. Uses a holistic approach to care, and emphasizes health promotion, patient education/counseling, and disease prevention.

Position Duties:
  • Medical diagnosis, treatment, evaluation, and management of a wide range of acute and chronic diseases.
  • Obtains patient histories and conduct physical examinations.
  • Orders and perform diagnostic studies.
  • Requests physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other rehabilitation treatments.
  • Prescribes drugs for acute and chronic illness.
  • Provides family planning services.
  • Provides primary and specialty care services, health-maintenance care for adults, including annual physicals.
  • Performs minor surgeries and procedures.
  • Counsels and educates clients on health behaviors, self-care skills, and treatment options in coordination with other healthcare providers.
  • Coordinates efforts with Integrated Treatment Team.
  • Attends all treatment team meetings and other required meetings and trainings.
  • Documents and codes all services
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Alaska licensure Physician Assistant (PA-C)
  • Experience in the generalist RN role
  • Graduation from an accredited graduate (MSN) or doctoral (DNP) program
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license with Prescriptive Authority
  • Advanced knowledge of medication treatment modalities and their application to adults with mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Commitment to patient involvement in the practice of their own health care decision-making.
  • Ability to practice independently as allowed by the statutes of the State of Alaska.
  • Ability to produce written documentation of clinical work in a timely manner.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload in a sometimes hectic environment with frequent interruptions.

Reporting to the Superintendent, Human Resources, the Physician Assistant provides a variety of occupational and emergency medical services for the Red Dog Operations.


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Promote and ensure a safe work environment and safety conscious work force by supporting and following safety initiatives, procedures, and activities
  • Operate a Medical treatment facility to ensure that injured or sick employees are provided with proper care. Provides routine medical treatment during clinic hours, and is on call 24 hours per day for emergencies
  • Assist in the development of the Red Dog Wellness program and lead the implementation, administration and monitoring of the program
  • Keep accurate records of all surveillance data, clinical visits, services, accidents, or illnesses
  • Responsible for collecting and sending out samples for the purpose of drug and alcohol testing and maintain records and chain of custody in accordance with the laws 
  • Establish and maintain and appropriate level of medical supplies
  • Conduct the first-aid and health portion (blood lead, cadmium, and hearing conservation of MSHA annual refresher training
  • Responsible for providing direction and training for the MERT, and Port Medics
  • Assist with Workers’ Compensation correspondence and claims data
  • Provide testing, shipping, tracking and confirmation of COVID-19 Protocols for Red Dog Operations
  • Perform other related duties as assigned


  • Graduate of an accredited PA program;
  • Current Alaska PA License & NCCPA certification preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication, editing, organization and interpersonal skills are a must
  • Must be able to work independently and as member of a proactive, consciously customer service-oriented team
  • Must be able to operate in a strict climate of confidentiality and discretion.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, access, and PowerPoint is required
